Glutathione consists of three amino acids: cysteine, glutamate, and glycine.
Glutathione is sometimes confused with glutamine and glutamate because of the similarity in the names. Although the three molecules are related, they are different in composition and function. When healthy, all three are balanced and create a delicate dance within your body.
In a nutshell, this is the difference between the three:
- Glutamine: The most abundant amino acid in your body, is made in your glutamate brain; It has an important role in various anti-injury and muscular repair processes; A precursor of glutathione.
- Glutathione (two types, GSH and GSSG): the "Master Antioxidant" — the most potent antioxidant in the body, present in each cell. It protects cells and is especially important for liver health; It decomposes into free glutamate.
- Glutamate (also known as glutamic acid or L-glutamate): Neurotransmitter of mono peptides amino acids in your brain — needed for synaptic activity — it doesn't take too much of it--it's an excitotoxins. (also see monosodium glutamate or MSG)
Glutathione is different from other antioxidants given that it is intracellular. It has the unique ability to increase the activity of all other antioxidants, including vitamins C and E, CoQ10, alpha lipoic acid and fresh vegetables and fruits that eat every day. It removes toxins from its cells and protects it from the harmful effects of radiation, chemicals and environmental pollutants.
You might think that a miraculous molecule like glutathione can be an ideal thing to pack up in the form of a supplement. As usual, science loses with nature when it comes to optimizing this little gem that promotes health.
There is currently a lot of publicity about supplementing with glutathione, highly popularized as a "miracle" to improve health, prevent disease and combat aging.

- Coronary and autoimmune diseases
- Arthritis, asthma, and other inflammatory conditions
- Mitochondrial dysfunction
- Muscle weakness and fatigue
The synthesis of glutathione depends on
adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which is the molecule that provides cellular energy. Therefore, glutathione levels are linked to energy deficiency, or low ATP.
This is one of the main reasons why exercise is so beneficial for your overall health, among other things, it promotes your levels of glutathione.
If it could increase the internal production of glutathione, it would strengthen the immune system in a way that would protect it from many of the adverse effects of aging.
How do glutathione supplements work?
Your body is bad enough to transport the glutathione from your digestive system to the blood. Most glutathione supplements have been shown to have a bad absorption and are a loss of their hard earned money.
Intravenous glutathione supplements have been somewhat successful, but this is certainly not practical and very costly and should be reserved for extreme situations. Glutathione supplementation can help people with immunodeficiency, but only to a certain extent--and only temporarily--something like recharging a dead battery.
Ironically, glutathione supplements could actually interfere with the very production of glutathione in your body.
The human body is programmed to self-produce its own antioxidant enzymes such as glutathione and SOD (superoxide dismutase, the first antioxidant mobilized by cells as defense). And the synthetic supplementation of these compounds actually tells your body to stop its own production — which makes it dependent on synthetic substances (supplements or medications).
Glutathione levels can be improved in some ways by taking supplements such as alpha lipoic acid, which is known to regenerate glutathione. Alpha Lipoic acid also helps to regenerate the vitamins C and E to stay active longer in your body. Red meat and Viscera are the best food source of alpha lipoic acid.
Glutamine can be used as a supplement as it is a direct precursor of glutathione. However, there is some evidence that it is not absorbed well.
There is also evidence that vitamin D increases intracellular glutathione. Unless you are a new reader on my site, you know that I am a vitamin D enthusiastic fan and this is another reason why it is very important to your health.
Some nutrition authorities recommend taking a form of cysteine known as N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC), but I would not recommend using this supplement if you still have mercury amalgam fillings as it might interfere with the detoxification of the Mercury.
Fortunately, there are natural ways to increase your body's glutathione reserves.
Vitamins and supplements have their uses, but they are always less desirable than nutrients in their natural form, which are obtained through the food they consume. What has been demonstrated despite all the doubts is that a food based on Whole Foods — rich in vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds and quality protein — promotes health and longevity.
What foods promote the highest levels of glutathione?
Many whole foods contain significant amounts of glutathione or its precursors. The richest foods in sulfur-containing amino acids are usually the best sources of glutathione:
- The best foods in general to maximize your glutathione is the high quality lacto whey protein. It must be lactose cold-pressed whey made from cows ' milk fed with pasture and free of hormones, chemicals and sugar.
- The quality Lacto Serum offers all the key amino acids for the production of glutathione (cysteine, glycine and glutamate) and contains a single cysteine residue (glutamylcysteine) which is highly bioactive in its affinity to become glutathione.
- Glutamylcysteine is a cysteine-linked molecule (cysteine plus glutamate) that occurs naturally in bovine serum albumin--a fragile immune component of buttermilk. This unique cysteine is unique to lacto serum and is rarely present in other protein-rich foods — the reason why whey protein is the best food source that promotes glutathione.
- On the other hand, serum provides important cofactors, immunoglobulins, lactoferrin and Alpha lactalbumin (it is also an excellent source of cysteine), which together help to create the appropriate metabolic environment for a high glutathione activity.
- Raw milk products, raw eggs and meat: glutathione occurs at higher levels in fresh raw meats and raw milk, but is practically absent in pasteurized dairy products. Fresh fruits and vegetables provide excellent glutathione, but once cooked, their values become negligible. Spinach, potatoes, asparagus, avocado, pumpkin, okra (okra) cauliflower, broccoli, walnuts, garlic and tomatoes have the highest levels of glutathione per serving.
- Milk Thistle Herb is an excellent source of silymarin antioxidant compound, which can help prevent glutathione depletion in the liver. Glutathione is crucial in the liver for detoxification and may be depleted due to acetaminophen (Tylenol), alcohol consumption, and general toxic overload.
- Curcumin may also be useful for increasing glutathione levels.
Maintaining stable levels of glutathione is a matter of increasing the factors that increase your glutathione and decrease the factors that decrease it. Things that quickly deplete glutathione are chemicals, toxins, and sugar.
The indicated Lacto Serum
If you want to supplement your diet with lacto whey protein products, you need to be careful because not all lacto whey protein products are the same. Supermarkets and nutrition stores are full of protein powder options, 99 percent of them are loaded with sugar and chemicals that support their health goals.
